Veterans’ Initiatives

Under the guidance of Former President, Albert “Bert” Siclari ’69, the WHFAA has established a relationship with the West Haven Veterans’ Administration. This relationship has spawned several opportunities to raise awareness and support the Veterans of our community.

1. Friday Heroes Nights

Transportation and admission is provided to residents of the West Haven VA to WHHS home football games. Veterans are provided Prime Seating with the WHFAA Board in the North End Zone of Ken Strong Stadium. They are recognized during the National Anthem and Enjoy a night of football and pizza under the lights as guests of the WHFAA and WHHS.

2. Soderman Bowl & Fill the Helmet to Benefit WWP

In 2013, the Annual West Haven High and Notre Dame of West Haven football game was
renamed the Soderman Bowl, in honor of Pfc. William Soderman, WWII Veteran and
Congressional Medal of Honor winner. The Soderman Bowl brings additional attention to
this annual rivalry game, as well as raising awareness of our local veterans and the sacrifices
they have made to defend our freedom.

In conjunction with the Soderman Bowl, the WHFAA and the WHHS Football team and
Cheerleaders execute a “Fill the Helmet” campaign. Members of the two squads along with
WHFAA and community volunteers, set up donation points at several key traffic points
throughout the city. Funds raised during the “Fill the Helmet” as well as other efforts leading
up to the Soderman Bowl, are presented to the Wounded Warrior Project during a halftime
ceremony.

3. Future Involvement:

Over the first five years, the WHFAA has worked very hard through its Veterans’ Initiative to
bring awareness and recognition to our local veterans and their service and sacrifice. We
continue to look for new opportunities to assist local wounded, homeless and transitional
veterans.
